Jun 10, Michelle rated it really liked it Shelves: romance , historicalfiction.
After reading a scathing review on Amazon I absolutely had to pick up this novel. I was pleasantly surprised by it. The story surrounds the haunted Alexander MacDubh and the spirited Ailis. A sort of Romeo and Juliet story, but one with a much happier ending. I thought the characters were really well written and believable. A really great story that you can read over and over. Mar 15, Elke rated it really liked it Shelves: chick-lits-romance. And Hannah Howell definitely knows how to make a girl day dream!
I've reread this book and loved it again :. Ailis MacFarlane has unhappily come to terms with her fate. She is the last of her family, and her uncle has demanded she marry Donald MacCordy to secure a bond between the families. A way to add strength against their enemies. The number one enemy being the MacDubhs. Little did they realize that the bastard children her sister had left with her were half MacDubhs.
Alexander MacDubhs finds out about his niece and nephews almost too late to bring the home. His brother's drunken rant revels the tru Ailis MacFarlane has unhappily come to terms with her fate. His brother's drunken rant revels the truth, and when they steal the children, they end up with the betrothed of a MacCordy and a MacFarlane as well.
The chance for revenge is almost too much for Alexander to handle, but Ailis is not what he expected. Her fierce spirit just might chance the tragic shadows in his heart away. Really sweet. Alexander and Ailis has a wonderful give and take together, one didn't really outshine the other. Start of the book was good going into a great plot and bam!
The ending does not disappoint, it actually had a wonderful ending. I think it will stand on its on two feet just fine. This is the Hannah Howell I'm used to. Boring slow and just ridiculous last half of book Me reading the book "For the love of God!!! She's still walking in the woods?! Love This story was heart wrenching and brutal. You wonder if the way Ailis is treated is the way it really was for women.
Great story, would recommend. Sep 19, Ashley rated it liked it. In general I enjoyed this novel, but it was a bit too similar plot-wise to one of Howell's earlier novels, His Bonnie Bride, for my taste. May 24, TinaMarie rated it really liked it. Clan feuds, vengeance, greed, men in kilts and a fiery woman, trademark Howell. Well…this isn't a whimsical story of love with sweeping, leisurely moments of romance. It's more like a story of redemption in the coldest of hearts, and how the fight for love is the worthiest cause of all.
He was presented as the easy-going and smooth-with-th Well…this isn't a whimsical story of love with sweeping, leisurely moments of romance. He was presented as the easy-going and smooth-with-the ladies, Adonis. The ultimate charmer and sweet talker now devastated by loss, grief, hatred, and an unfettered hunger for revenge. His life since book 1 has not been easy as he has endured traumatic events, at every turn. In general, Alexander seemed to have poor instincts when it came to choosing wives seriously, the man seemed like an idiot when it came to his previous women.
Therefore, women played an instrumental part in destroying everything dear to him. Oh my goodness!!! Ailis, as many women in her era, served as a chess piece in this game between men. LIttle did she know that being captured by Laird Alexander was about to turn her world upside down, yet lead her to a fulfillment in life that she would have never known prior. Although the formula is similar to book 1, Alex allows Ailis some freewill while studying her at a distance.
In addition, at night he loved her passionately, but treated her with disdain during daylight hours. I like how Ailis dealt with him in this regardshe quickly put him in his place …LOL I felt that for most of Part 1, Ailis was "unpacking" all of the "baggage" Alex brought to the relationship from previous ones. The love development is a bit dry, and mainly because Alex was so emotionally stunted. There are no memorable love scenes or moments between the pair that will leave you breathless…. It's more about two people growing learning to love and trust one another. The bond between Ailis and Alex is tried by fire.
Part 2 of this book is really hard on the couple. They wield unparalleled power that looms over the MacDubh clan like a dark shadow. Ailis' uncle Colin MacFarlane is also a pretty disgusting character. I think she did a good job. Her voicing for Alex was a little flat, but who can blame her?
Even though there are dark parts, I pushed forward because I cared for the characters and was rooting for their HEA. I was disappointed that there was no epilogue, nor inclusion of characters in previous books to tie all of their stories together…. I was hoping to get some insight into Tavis and Storm's lives and "ever after. May 16, tacitus rated it liked it. First, the historical accuracy. It is usually par for the course in historical romances that the hero and heroine are a bit anachronistic, appealing to our modern sensibilities while flitting around in period clothing.
In that, so many historical romances are just modern people minus electricity. In this case, however, Howell does a remarkable job writing people as they would have sounded and thought in this time. The characters, including the women, are incredibly misogynistic. I'm not writing that as a negative, because it's simple fact. There were no feminists in the 14th century, so thank you, Ms.
Howell, for keeping it realistic! It's like the author was "hinting" and "insinuating" to force the reader to imagine it herself. A very good method, in my opinion.
Lastly, the emotion: Oh, there's lots of that! You won't be reading this and feeling nothing. Especially when our heroine is being held in the beginning and the men are talking, boldly an openly, about her impending rape! You will read those scenes with your skin crawling and your fists clenching because they talk about this horrible thing as if it just IS.
As if raping this poor women is as inevitable as the sun rising tomorrow. It will enrage you and make you want to throw the book across the room, but resist the urge. The rest of the book will be worth it. The only reason I gave this 3 stars is because I like almost every book I read, and I can't keep giving everything 5 stars. I'm working on a different bell curve. Jan 10, Tami rated it really liked it. One of my favorite Hannah Howell books so far. Though I love all her books and have read dang near ALL of them, they're all pretty much the same.
There were things in this book that made it different from her others. The male lead, Alexander, is kind of a jerk ok, a major jerk , but as you get to know him, you can understand why. I find it hard to hold it against him.
Most of it anyway. This isn't all that different from her other books. He's also somewhat of a rogue as most of the male leads i One of my favorite Hannah Howell books so far. He's also somewhat of a rogue as most of the male leads in her books are. This 'type of scene' doesn't usually happen until much later in her books due to some kind of strange flame or sense of honor of the male lead. I was actually excited about the fact that he didn't care, and did what he set out to do. The rest of the story reminded me of either Highland Barbarian or Highland Warrior.
I can't remember which.. Ailis' character was so strong. Even though she stayed in Alexanders bed, she was able to use some sense and self control to pull away for an extended period of time.
Athens: University of Georgia Press. As one other positive reviewer said, there were no fem So, after reading this book I decided to read some of the reviews for it yeah, kinda backwards but whatever , there was a lot of hate for mainly rapist, masochistic, archaic thinking. Other editions. Hannah Howell's characters are believable, her depiction of the Scotland countryside realistic, and she does a remarkable job writing people as they would have sounded and thought in this time period. Her voicing for Alex was a little flat, but who can blame her? Readers also enjoyed.
I was impressed it was a whole month, considering most females in Howells books, don't pull away at all. I was also impressed with her common sense. Over all this was a really good book for me. So, after reading this book I decided to read some of the reviews for it yeah, kinda backwards but whatever , there was a lot of hate for mainly rapist, masochistic, archaic thinking. The whole time I was reading those hate reviews, I couldn't help but disagree. Okay, yes there was definitely some not so pleasant situations ie the impending rape and dishonering of the female lead , but this kind of thing was not so uncommon in those times.
As one other positive reviewer said, there were no fem So, after reading this book I decided to read some of the reviews for it yeah, kinda backwards but whatever , there was a lot of hate for mainly rapist, masochistic, archaic thinking. As one other positive reviewer said, there were no feminists in those days.
Yes, there are things that grate on modern ideals, but this book isn't set in modern times. So, if domineering, super hot, often excessively arrogonant or over-confident male leads and often less then modernly perfect, sometimes submissive female leads irk you to much to enjoy a good story, then this book and most all others of such like are not for you.
If you DO like and appreciate a good historical romance, I would recommend this book. The chatacters, though flawed, are real and lovable; and the plot is filled with emotion, action and suspence, with in my opinion a very sweet HEA. Sep 22, kate rated it did not like it Shelves: dimwit-hero , historical-romance , hannah-howell. God awful. While a lot of people were upset that Alexander back hands Ailas and sends her flying at the beginning of the book it paled in comparison to their dinner conversation. He sat at the table and told her in front of his men ,brother, 5 year old niece an 7 year old nephews how he is going to rape her.
He is doing this he brags to get vengeance on her family and her betrothed. Neither of these things upset her to much and in fact she has a pretty good time on their first time together. Sev God awful. Several major climaxes in fact. Is it any wonder she falls in love with this creep? Alright I wondered. Maybe I'm setting the hero bar to high but a man who smacks you, rapes you and puts you down constantly doesn't cut it in my book. Oh and the 5 year old child's reaction to the aunt being hit is priceless. She hits her uncle in the balls and curses him out.
Has Hannah Howell ever been around a 5 year old. This is the uncle she met earlier in the day when he kidnapped them. Most children would have bust out crying. But then most woman don't enjoy being raped. This family is obviously marching to the beat of a different drummer. I've read HH books I've liked but this one is a total train wreck.
I love Howell's strong male protagonists and this 14th century story has what I'd call a true alpha male -- cruel and sexually abusive to the heroine on meeting The heroine is running from family and an enemy clan -- and with the 3 children of her dead sister Ailis is trying to save.
Turns out our alpha male, Alexander, is the until now unknown father. The two protagonists battle each other and, of course, themselves. We have to put ourselves into a lates frame of mind and realize women didn't really have rights or a substantial place in society except to breed and raise an heir. I really enjoy Howell's style and find myself rereading her books. I would always recommend her to lovers of the romance genre. This is one of the books of the Highland Brides series but definitely a standalone story Jul 07, K rated it liked it Recommends it for: fans of series.
I was excited to find out this was going to be Alexander's story, as I really liked his character in the previous books. What I wasn't prepared for was how dark, brooding, and hardened his character had become. Although I had high hopes for this book, I could not give it more than 3 stars.
A part of me admired the heroine's dete I was excited to find out this was going to be Alexander's story, as I really liked his character in the previous books. A part of me admired the heroine's determination to make the marriage work between her and Alexander.
I would probably recommend this book to fans of the Highland Brides series of books, but don't know if I would recommend it to other readers. I would like to see the author continues this series, and look forward to another book. Mar 06, Christina Adams rated it it was amazing. Do you not think we would want to hear about Colin, Tavis and Iain?
As close as Iain and Islaen were to Alexander and for them to not even make a cameo was truly a let down. Also, I can see the bitterness and the change in Alexander, but really thought that we drug that on a while too long. I was glad to hear Alexander's story, but I will admit to feeling sorry for all t 2nd time reading and I will say that for a trilogy and not to bring any of the other characters into it was really a let down. I was glad to hear Alexander's story, but I will admit to feeling sorry for all the bad that had befallen him. I also hated that none of his friends were in the book.
I hated that Iain and Tavis were no where in the story.
I don't believe I've ever truly disliked a hero of Hannah Howell's books as I have this hero. While the overall story was good, along with plot and some characters, I found the hero to be overwhelmingly rude and uncouth. I felt the heroine put up with far too much with his constant insults and condescension. And even though it all worked out in the end, I still felt the heroine dearly deserved so much better.
Mar 08, Leah rated it really liked it Shelves: couldnt-put-it-down , historical-romance , good-fiction , interesting-read , just-wtf , guilty-pleasure , took-a-while , emotional-twist , four-star-reviews , own-physical-book. Holy crap, this book has thrown my emotions into a blender and just whipped it around like it ain't no thang.
I have no words. I might eventually be able to edit this and write a proper review, but for now, just know that this book is unexpected. It makes you happy, sad as hell, pissed as fuck, and excited. All at once. May 18, Scooper Speaks rated it liked it Shelves: re-read. I hated the hero of this book. He was a major ass throughout the story. The heroine knew she was going to be raped and decided to try and find pleasure instead of fight him. The hero knew that even if the heroine fought him he was going to have sex with her.
Dec 20, Amandapanda rated it liked it. This book is not for the faint of heart. It begins by Ailis being captured by a rival clan-leader, Alexander, and being coerced into having sex with him. She enjoys it, but she didn't excatly have a choice. The coercion doesn't stop To be fair, for starting out so poorly the book does get better as you go along. Jul 25, Kashii rated it liked it. After thoroughly enjoying Alexander's character in Highland wedding i was disappointed with how he was written in his own novel. It's a good, solid book but there has to come a point when she says "enough is enough" and stops laying her heart before him to stomp all over.
And the interesting background characters were dumped mid-development. Feb 21, Donna Campbell rated it really liked it. I almost did not like Alexander for so long that it almost "recked" the book--Ailis was so powerful it balanced it. She forgave him WAY too easily though. Another well done Highland novel. And that is getting hard to say.
